How to Grow as a Leader: Key takeaways from episode 46

  • Leaders develop in many ways, but the most significant growth occurs through challenges—when you’re faced with something that pushes you to progress in larger ways than you’ve done in the past.

  • Kevin’s CPRI model can help us remember to identify those stretch opportunities and ensure we’re learning from them. CPRI stands for Challenge, Pause, Resources, Intention. Through that model, we have the opportunity to step back and ensure we’re able to learn and apply the new lessons in the future.

  • Write down your intentions for growth as a leader. On a one-page plan, you can define your desired legacy, steps you’ll take to get there, and what you’re learning about leadership in the process. Over time, come back to the one-page plan to see how you’re doing.

  • Ask someone to hold you accountable to your goals for growth. This is the most important contributing factor to the success Kevin has seen over and over with his students.

  • Remember that your one-page plan may shift over time, but challenges are opportunities for growth. Research has shown that teams that faced disruption actually improved more over time than their counterparts who were unaffected by changing circumstances.

  • Keep the momentum of overcoming challenges and learning new things. The leader of the future is an ongoing learner.

  • Kevin’s most recent research is into coachability, which he defines as a leader’s curiosity to learn, receive feedback, and improve. The tendency is for leaders who are further along in their careers to become lower on coachability over time. Kevin describes coachability as a muscle that we all need to continue to exercise regularly.
